Special magistrates to check prices of essential items

The Executive District Officer (EDO) Revenue Roshan Ali Shaikh has directed the Special Judicial Magistrates of all towns in Karachi to start checking the rates of grocery items, milk and vegetables sold in the markets and various Bachat Bazaars so that the citizens are spared from overpricing during the holy month of Ramzan.

Shaikh chaired a meeting of the officers of Revenue Department which was attended by Additional EDO Revenue Matanat Ali Khan, Zonal Additional District Officers Revenue, Special Judicial Magistrates of 18 towns of Karachi, Chief of Consumer Rights Council (CRC) Ahmed Chinoy and members of CRC Huma Bukhari and Rafiq Bashir.

The EDO Revenue on this occasion warned the traders and shopkeepers to avoid overcharging on grocery items, milk, vegetables and other utility items or strict action will be taken against them.

He also directed the traders to affix the price list of grocery items and vegetables issued by the E&IP Department in their shops and stores otherwise they will have to face heavy fine. The price list can be obtained from E&IP Department or from the concerned association of traders. Additional EDO Revenue Karachi Matanat Ali Khan was appointed in charge of the price checking in the city. He will monitor price checking at all levels.

Meanwhile, Sindh Minister for Supply and Prices, Shoaib Ahmed Bukhari on Thursday chaired a meeting to ensure essential items smooth supply at reasonable price in the province during Ramazan.

It was attended by representatives of wholesalers, retailers, manufacturers, producers of milk, meat, flour mills association, poultry, bakery items, dates, edible oil, etc.

After discussion, negotiation, the Meat Merchant Association committed to provide meat of all qualities Rs20 less per kilo of the existing rate.

Chicken: General Secretary, Sindh Poultry Association committed to ensure Chicken meat Rs5 to Rs10 less per kilo of the existing rate which is Rs238/kg. Existing rate of live chicken is Rs140/kg and will be sold less Rs5-10/kg.

Flour/Atta: Representative of Flour Mills Association said that they already gave Re1 per kg relief in the province. The Sindh government announced provision of Ramazan Package and Atta/Wheat Flour will be Rs20 per kg.

Milk: Representative of Daily Milk Association committed not to increase price during Ramazan. To fix milk price, the minister desired to convene a meeting to resolve the issue.
